The Sacra di San Michele is an ancient abbey built between 983 and 987 on the top of Mount Pirchiriano, 40 km from Turin. Recognized as a symbol of the Piedmont Region and also the place that inspired the writer Umberto Eco for the best-seller Il nome della Rosa.
From the top of its towers you can admire the Piedmontese capital and a breathtaking view of the Val di Susa.
Inside the main church of the Sacra, dating back to the twelfth century, members of the royal family of the House of Savoy are buried.
Dedicated to the cult of the Archangel Michael, defender of the faith and Christian people, the Sacra di San Michele is part of a pilgrimage route over 2000km long that goes from Mont Saint-Michel, in France, to Monte Sant'Angelo , in Puglia.
The history, the spiritual value and the landscape that surrounds it make the Sacra a destination of attraction for visitors from all over Europe: pilgrims, faithful, tourists, but also sportsmen who want to test themselves with climbing or mountain biking trails.
The Sacra di San Michele offers the visitor meetings, events and guided tours organized by the religious community, the faithful and employees during all months of the year.
First of all, you can enjoy the path through the greenery and, as you go up, the splendid panorama and the imposing massif of the facade. Once you reach the entrance to the Abbey, the Sacra is ready to reveal some of its most evocative elements: the statue of St. Michael the Archangel created by the South Tyrolean sculptor Paul dë Doss-Moroder, the Staircase of the Dead with the Portal of the Zodiac and the legendary Torre della Bell'Alda.
During the special visits on the first Saturday of the month you can also admire the museum of the newspaper that collects objects of other times, the library that has about 10,000 volumes, the ancient rooms of the House of Savoy and, again, tombs, arches, portals and paintings to discover, accompanied by faithful volunteers.
